Description

This course equips learners with the skills to design effective learning events that meet organisational and individual development needs. Participants will learn to analyse training requirements, develop learning objectives, and structure events that facilitate knowledge transfer and skill development in a corporate environment.

This course is designed for training coordinators, learning and development practitioners, and HR professionals responsible for planning and designing learning interventions within their organisations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Learning Event Design

Objectives:
• Understand the SAQA framework and unit standard requirements for designing learning events.
• Identify the key components of a learning event, including needs analysis and stakeholder engagement.
• Differentiate between learning outcomes, objectives, and assessment criteria.
• Explore adult learning principles and their application in training design.

Topics:
• Introduction to SAQA and the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
• Unit Standard 119763: purpose and scope.
• Conducting a training needs analysis.
• Defining learning outcomes and objectives using Bloom's taxonomy.
• Principles of adult learning (andragogy).
• Overview of the learning event design process.

Day 2: Designing Learning Content and Activities

Objectives:
• Structure learning content logically to support progressive skill development.
• Design engaging learning activities that align with learning objectives.
• Select appropriate instructional methods and media for diverse audiences.
• Develop formative and summative assessment strategies.

Topics:
• Organising content: sequencing, chunking, and scaffolding.
• Activity types: case studies, role-plays, simulations, and discussions.
• Matching instructional methods to learning styles.
• Selecting and integrating media and technology.
• Developing assessment instruments: rubrics, quizzes, and practical tasks.
• Ensuring alignment between outcomes, activities, and assessments.

Day 3: Facilitation and Delivery Planning

Objectives:
• Plan a facilitator guide and participant materials for a learning event.
• Apply facilitation techniques to manage group dynamics and promote participation.
• Prepare for logistical considerations, including venue, equipment, and timing.
• Develop contingency plans for common training challenges.

Topics:
• Creating facilitator guides: session plans, timing, and notes.
• Designing participant workbooks, handouts, and job aids.
• Facilitation skills: questioning, active listening, and handling difficult participants.
• Managing group dynamics and fostering inclusive learning environments.
• Logistics: room setup, materials preparation, and scheduling.
• Risk management: troubleshooting technical issues and adapting on the fly.

Day 4: Assessment and Evaluation of Learning Events

Objectives:
• Design assessment tasks that measure achievement of learning outcomes.
• Implement formative and summative assessment during and after the event.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of a learning event using Kirkpatrick’s model.
• Use feedback to improve future learning events.

Topics:
• Types of assessment: diagnostic, formative, and summative.
• Designing practical assessments and knowledge tests.
• Assessment moderation and quality assurance.
• Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluation.
• Collecting and analysing participant feedback.
• Reporting on learning event outcomes and making recommendations.

Day 5: Integration, Practice, and Portfolio Preparation

Objectives:
• Integrate all design phases into a comprehensive learning event plan.
• Present a learning event design for peer and facilitator feedback.
• Prepare evidence for portfolio assessment against Unit Standard 119763.
• Reflect on personal learning and identify areas for continued development.

Topics:
• Consolidating the design process: from needs analysis to evaluation.
• Presenting a sample learning event design (group or individual).
• Peer review and constructive feedback.
• Portfolio requirements: collecting and organising evidence.
• Self-assessment and action planning for professional growth.
• Course wrap-up and certification process.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
