Description

This course equips pilots and flight operations personnel with the knowledge and skills to perform thorough pre-flight planning for large aeroplanes, ensuring flight safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. Emphasis is placed on risk assessment, fuel management, weather analysis, and route planning in accordance with South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and international standards.

Target Audience

This course is designed for commercial pilots, flight dispatchers, and operations staff involved in the planning and execution of flights for large aeroplanes, typically those with a maximum take-off mass exceeding 5,700 kg.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Pre-Flight Planning and Regulatory Framework

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of pre-flight planning for large aeroplanes.
• Identify the relevant South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) regulations and international standards.
• Recognise key documents, forms, and sources of aeronautical information.
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of the flight crew in pre-flight planning.

• Overview of pre-flight planning processes.
• SACAA CAR/CAIRS and ICAO Annex 6 requirements.
• Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), NOTAMs, and weather briefings.
• Flight crew responsibilities and operational control.
• Introduction to performance planning concepts.
• Safety management systems and hazard identification.
• Documentation: flight plan, load sheet, fuel slip, and operational flight plan.
• Communication with dispatch and air traffic control.

Day 2: Meteorology and Weather Interpretation

Objectives:
• Analyse weather reports and forecasts (METAR, TAF, SIGMET, etc.).
• Interpret weather charts and satellite imagery for route planning.
• Assess the impact of weather phenomena on flight safety.
• Apply weather minima and alternate aerodrome requirements.

• Sources of meteorological data.
• Understanding METAR, TAF, SIGMET, AIRMET, and PIREP.
• Wind charts, temperature charts, and icing forecasts.
• Thunderstorms, turbulence, wind shear, and volcanic ash.
• Low visibility operations and fog.
• Determination of alternate aerodromes.
• Weather impact on fuel planning and payload.
• Case studies of weather-related incidents.

Day 3: Aircraft Performance and Weight & Balance

Objectives:
• Calculate take-off, landing, and en-route performance using aircraft manuals.
• Determine weight and balance limitations and compute centre of gravity.
• Apply performance corrections for runway conditions, temperature, and altitude.
• Interpret performance charts and tables for large aeroplanes.

• Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) performance sections.
• Take-off performance: field length, climb gradient, obstacle clearance.
• Landing performance: landing distance, approach climb.
• En-route performance: drift-down, one-engine-inoperative ceilings.
• Weight and balance principles: load sheet preparation.
• Centre of gravity envelope and trim settings.
• Performance adjustments for contaminated runways.
• Practical exercises using performance software.

Day 4: Fuel Planning and Management

Objectives:
• Compute fuel requirements for a given route including reserves.
• Understand fuel policy and regulations for large aeroplanes.
• Apply fuel conservation techniques and contingency planning.
• Manage fuel during in-flight re-planning scenarios.

Topics:
• Fuel planning regulations (CAR 91.07, ICAO Annex 6).
• Trip fuel, contingency fuel, alternate fuel, final reserve, and extra fuel.
• Fuel calculation methods: manual and electronic.
• Effects of wind, temperature, and altitude on fuel consumption.
• Fuel jettisoning procedures.
• Fuel management during delays and diversions.
• Cost index and fuel optimisation.
• Practical fuel planning exercise.

Day 5: Route Planning and Navigation

Objectives:
• Plan a route using airways, waypoints, and navigation aids.
• Apply airspace classifications and restrictions.
• Interpret instrument departure and arrival procedures.
• Use aeronautical charts and electronic flight bags for navigation.

Topics:
• Route selection: standard instrument departures (SIDs), standard terminal arrivals (STARs), and airways.
• Navigation aids: VOR, DME, NDB, GPS, and inertial navigation.
• Airspace structure: controlled, uncontrolled, special use airspace.
• NOTAMs and temporary flight restrictions.
• Chart reading: en-route, terminal, and approach charts.
• Electronic flight bag (EFB) applications.
• Navigation log preparation.
• Practical route planning exercise.

Day 6: Operational Flight Planning and Flight Watch

Objectives:
• Compile a complete operational flight plan (OFP).
• Monitor flight progress and update plans in real-time.
• Manage fuel, weather, and airspace changes during flight.
• Coordinate with dispatch and ATC for re-routing.

• Components of an operational flight plan.
• Flight watch procedures and position reporting.
• In-flight re-planning: weather avoidance, fuel checks.
• Communications with dispatch and ATC.
• Use of ACARS and data link for updates.
• Emergency and contingency planning.
• Case studies of in-flight re-planning.
• Practical OFP generation exercise.

Day 7: Risk Assessment and Decision Making

Objectives:
• Apply risk assessment models (TEM, FRAT) to pre-flight planning.
• Evaluate threats and errors in the planning phase.
• Make go/no-go decisions based on operational risk.
• Develop personal minimums and safety margins.

Topics:
• Threat and error management (TEM) model.
• Flight risk assessment tools (FRAT).
• Human factors in decision making: fatigue, stress, complacency.
• Aeronautical decision making (ADM) models.
• Risk mitigation strategies.
• Case studies of planning failures.

Day 8: Integration, Simulation, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Integrate all pre-flight planning elements into a comprehensive plan.
• Perform a simulated pre-flight planning scenario.
• Demonstrate competence in a practical assessment.
• Review regulatory compliance and best practices.

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in using flight planning software, performance charts, and weather interpretation tools. Learners will complete a full operational flight plan and participate in a simulated pre-flight briefing and decision-making exercise.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Weather Briefing and Interpretation — Learners access real-time weather data, interpret METAR/TAF, and produce a weather summary for a given route. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Performance and Weight & Balance Calculation — Using aircraft performance manuals and software, learners calculate take-off and landing performance and prepare a load sheet. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Fuel Planning and Operational Flight Plan — Learners compute fuel requirements and compile a complete operational flight plan for a multi-sector route. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Route Planning and Navigation Log — Using charts and EFB, learners plan a route including SIDs/STARs and create a navigation log. (4h)
  • Practical 5: Simulated Pre-Flight Briefing and Assessment — Learners present a full pre-flight briefing covering weather, performance, fuel, and route, followed by an assessment. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
