Description

This course equips pilots with the specialised skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively conduct routine test flights in aircraft. It covers pre-flight planning, in-flight test procedures, data recording, and post-flight analysis to ensure aircraft airworthiness and operational safety.

Target Audience

This course is designed for licensed commercial pilots and airline transport pilots who are required to perform routine test flights as part of their duties. It is also suitable for test pilots and flight operations personnel seeking to enhance their competency in aircraft testing.

Prerequisites

Valid commercial pilot license (CPL) or airline transport pilot license (ATPL) with at least 500 hours of flight experience. Completion of a recognised test pilot course is recommended but not mandatory.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Routine Test Flying and Regulatory Framework

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of routine test flying.
• Identify key regulatory bodies and documentation (CAA, SA-CATS, Part 21).
• Explain the role of the test pilot and flight test engineer.
• Recognize safety protocols and risk management in test flying.

Day 13: Integrated Practical Assessment and Course Review

Practicals

Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience in planning, executing, and analyzing routine test flights. Learners will use flight simulators and aircraft mock-ups to practice test maneuvers, data collection, and emergency procedures, culminating in a full integrated assessment.

Practical Activities
  • Simulated Test Flight Planning — Learners work in teams to plan a routine test flight, including mission objectives, flight cards, risk assessment, and briefing. (8h)
  • Simulated Test Flight Execution — Using a flight simulator, learners execute planned test maneuvers, collect data, and handle simulated emergencies. (16h)
  • Data Analysis and Report Writing — Learners analyze flight data from the simulator session, compare with performance predictions, and write a test report. (8h)
  • Integrated Practical Assessment — Each learner plans, briefs, executes (simulated), and debriefs a routine test flight, demonstrating all competencies. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
