Description

This course equips trainers and facilitators with the specialised skills needed to design and deliver inclusive learning experiences for blind and partially sighted learners. Participants will learn to adapt instructional materials, use assistive technologies, and create accessible learning environments that promote equal participation and effective skill development.

Target Audience

This course is designed for trainers, educators, and facilitators working in corporate training, vocational education, or adult learning settings who currently or may in future support learners with visual impairments.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, prior experience in training or facilitation is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Understanding Blindness and Partial Sight

Objectives:
• Define blindness and partial sight according to SAQA and international standards.
• Identify common causes and prevalence of visual impairment in South Africa.
• Explain the impact of visual impairment on learning and development.
• Recognise the diversity within the visually impaired community.

• Definitions and classifications of visual impairment
• Causes and prevalence statistics
• Impact on cognitive, social, and emotional development
• Myths and stereotypes about blindness
• Legal and policy frameworks in South Africa

Day 2: The Learning Environment for Visually Impaired Learners

Objectives:
• Describe the principles of an inclusive learning environment.
• Identify physical and attitudinal barriers in typical classrooms.
• Plan modifications to create a conducive learning space.
• Understand the role of lighting, contrast, and layout.

• Principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
• Environmental audits and adjustments
• Lighting, colour contrast, and tactile markers
• Seating arrangements and mobility considerations
• Creating a supportive classroom culture

Day 3: Assistive Technologies and Tools

Objectives:
• List common assistive technologies for blind and partially sighted learners.
• Demonstrate basic use of screen readers and magnification software.
• Evaluate appropriate tools for different learning tasks.
• Understand the role of audio and braille materials.

• Screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA)
• Screen magnification and CCTV systems
• Braille displays and notetakers
• Audio books, DAISY players, and voice recognition
• Mobile apps for accessibility

Day 4: Braille Literacy and Tactile Graphics

Objectives:
• Explain the braille code and its importance for literacy.
• Read and produce basic braille using a slate and stylus.
• Interpret tactile graphics and diagrams.
• Integrate braille into learning activities.

• Braille writing tools: slate, stylus, and embosser

Day 5: Communication and Interaction Strategies

Objectives:
• Apply effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques.
• Develop skills in using descriptive language.
• Facilitate group interactions involving visually impaired learners.
• Understand the role of touch and auditory cues.

• Active listening and feedback

Day 6: Curriculum Adaptation and Differentiated Instruction

Objectives:
• Identify curriculum areas requiring adaptation.
• Modify learning materials for accessibility.
• Design differentiated activities for mixed-ability groups.
• Use multi-sensory teaching approaches.

• Incorporating audio, tactile, and kinaesthetic elements

Day 7: Assessment and Evaluation Methods

Objectives:
• Design fair and accessible assessments for visually impaired learners.
• Use alternative assessment formats (oral, practical, portfolio).
• Adapt standard tests and examinations.
• Provide constructive feedback using appropriate methods.

Day 8: Orientation and Mobility Training

Objectives:
• Understand basic orientation and mobility concepts.
• Facilitate spatial awareness and route planning.
• Teach use of the long cane and electronic travel aids.
• Promote independent movement within the learning environment.

• Spatial concepts and body awareness
• Long cane techniques and training
• Electronic travel aids (e.g., GPS, ultrasonic devices)
• Route planning and landmarks
• Safety and risk management

Day 9: Social and Emotional Support

Objectives:
• Recognise social and emotional challenges faced by visually impaired learners.
• Implement strategies to build self-esteem and resilience.
• Foster peer support networks.
• Address bullying and discrimination.

• Self-esteem and identity development
• Coping with frustration and isolation
• Peer mentoring and buddy systems
• Anti-bullying strategies
• Counselling and referral resources

Day 10: Collaboration with Parents, Specialists, and Support Staff

Objectives:
• Identify key stakeholders in supporting visually impaired learners.
• Develop effective communication with parents and caregivers.
• Coordinate with low vision specialists and therapists.
• Work with teaching assistants and support staff.

• Roles of parents, teachers, and specialists
• Conducting parent-teacher meetings

• Developing Individual Support Plans (ISPs)

Day 11: Legal and Ethical Considerations

Objectives:
• Understand South African legislation relevant to disability and education.
• Apply ethical principles in facilitating learning.
• Ensure confidentiality and informed consent.
• Advocate for learners' rights.

• SA Constitution and the Bill of Rights
• Education White Paper 6 on Inclusive Education
• Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act
• Ethical dilemmas in special needs education
• Advocacy and empowerment

Day 12: Practical Integration and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Demonstrate competence in adapting learning materials.
• Present a lesson plan incorporating inclusive strategies.
• Reflect on personal learning and professional development.
• Complete the final assessment for Unit Standard 117092.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
