This course equips learners with the skills to guide and support candidates through assessment and recognition of prior learning (RPL) opportunities. Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Assessment and Recognition

Objectives:
• Understand the principles and purposes of assessment and recognition of prior learning (RPL).
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of an assessor and a learner in the assessment process.
• Describe the different types of assessment and their applications.
• Explain the key legislation and SAQA requirements governing assessment in South Africa.

Topics:
• Introduction to assessment and recognition: definitions and importance.
• Principles of assessment: fairness, validity, reliability, and practicability.
• Overview of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and SAQA.
• Types of assessment: formative, summative, diagnostic, and RPL.
• Roles and responsibilities: assessor, learner, and moderator.
• Legal and ethical considerations in assessment.
• Introduction to unit standards and qualification frameworks.
• Overview of the assessment cycle: plan, conduct, and review.

Day 2: Planning and Conducting Assessments

Objectives:
• Develop assessment plans and instruments aligned to unit standards.
• Apply moderation principles to ensure quality assurance.
• Demonstrate effective feedback techniques to guide learners.
• Manage assessment evidence and records in compliance with SAQA requirements.

Topics:
• Designing assessment plans: identifying outcomes, evidence, and methods.
• Developing assessment instruments: observation, portfolio, and questioning.
• Conducting assessments: preparing learners, managing environment, and collecting evidence.
• Moderation principles: internal and external moderation processes.
• Providing constructive feedback and guiding learners through recognition opportunities.
• Managing assessment records: documentation, storage, and confidentiality.
• Addressing special needs and reasonable accommodation in assessments.
• Handling disputes and appeals in the assessment process.

Day 3: Advanced Applications and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Integrate RPL processes into assessment practice.
• Evaluate assessment systems for continuous improvement.
• Develop a personal action plan for implementing assessment and recognition.
• Apply learning to real-world scenarios through case studies and role-plays.

Topics:
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): principles, processes, and challenges.
• Assessing non-formal and informal learning: evidence gathering and validation.
• Quality assurance and continuous improvement of assessment systems.
• Case studies: applying assessment and recognition in different contexts.
• Role-play: conducting an assessment and providing feedback.
• Developing an action plan for implementing assessment and recognition.
• Review of key concepts and Q&A.
• Final assessment and course evaluation.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
