Day 1: Introduction to Learner Progress Reports and Regulatory Framework

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and importance of learner progress reports in the SAQA context.
• Identify the regulatory requirements under Unit Standard 117876.
• Recognise different types of progress reports and their audiences.
• Grasp the ethical considerations and confidentiality in reporting.

Day 2: Understanding Assessment Data and Evidence Collection

Objectives:
• Distinguish between different types of assessment evidence.
• Learn methods for collecting and organising learner data.
• Understand how to interpret assessment results.
• Apply principles of validity and reliability to data.

• Types of assessment: formative vs summative.
• Evidence sources: portfolios, observations, tests, projects.
• Data collection tools: checklists, rubrics, rating scales.

Day 3: Structure and Components of a Progress Report

• Identify the standard sections of a learner progress report.
• Develop clear and concise report headings.
• Understand the role of descriptive vs evaluative language.
• Create a report template aligned with organisational needs.

• Standard report sections: header, learner info, course details, competencies, attendance, comments, recommendations.

Day 4: Writing Competency Statements and Progress Descriptions

• Write clear, evidence-based statements about learner competencies.
• Describe progress using specific examples.
• Align statements with unit standard outcomes.
• Avoid vague or subjective language.

• Linking statements to assessment criteria.
• Using evidence to support claims.
• Describing progress: from novice to competent.
• Writing about competencies: knowledge, skills, attitudes.
• Examples of effective vs ineffective statements.
• Techniques for specificity: 'The learner can...'.
• Practical: Write competency statements for given scenarios.
• Group feedback and refinement.

Day 5: Providing Constructive Feedback and Recommendations

Objectives:
• Apply principles of constructive feedback in reports.
• Formulate actionable recommendations for learner development.
• Address underperformance sensitively.
• Incorporate learner self-assessment where appropriate.

• Principles of constructive feedback: specific, timely, respectful.
• Structuring feedback: sandwich method, STAR technique.
• Writing recommendations: SMART goals.
• Handling underperformance: supportive language.
• Encouraging learner reflection.
• Including learner self-assessment comments.
• Practical: Write feedback and recommendations for sample cases.

Day 6: Editing, Formatting, and Quality Assurance of Reports

Objectives:
• Apply editing techniques to improve clarity and professionalism.
• Use consistent formatting and style.
• Implement quality assurance checks.
• Prepare reports for submission to moderators.

• Editing for grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Consistency in terminology and style.
• Formatting: fonts, margins, headings, spacing.
• Proofreading techniques.
• Quality assurance checklist.
• Moderator requirements and expectations.
• Practical: Edit and format a sample report.
• Peer review: QA checklist application.

Day 7: Integration, Practical Application, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Compile a complete learner progress report from start to finish.
• Apply all skills learned in a simulated scenario.
• Reflect on personal learning and areas for growth.
• Prepare for workplace implementation.

• Review of key concepts from Days 1-6.
• Complete report writing simulation: from data to final report.
• Presentation and peer feedback.
• Self-assessment and reflection.
• Strategies for ongoing improvement.
• Resources and templates for workplace use.
• Final Q&A and course evaluation.
• Certificate of completion information.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
