This course equips educators, caregivers, and therapists with the skills to enhance the quality of life for blind and partially sighted children through targeted life skills development. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Quality of Life and Disability Context

Objectives:
• Understand the concept of quality of life (QoL) in the context of blind and partially sighted children.
• Identify key legislation and policies in South Africa (e.g., SAQA, UNCRPD, SIAS).
• Recognise the diversity within visual impairment and its impact on development.
• Explore the biopsychosocial model of disability.

• Definition and dimensions of quality of life.
• Overview of visual impairment: blindness vs. partial sight.
• South African policy framework for disability and inclusive education.
• Introduction to the biopsychosocial model.
• Role of the trainer and ethical considerations.

Day 2: Child Development and Visual Impairment

Objectives:
• Describe typical developmental milestones in early childhood.
• Analyse how visual impairment affects motor, cognitive, and social development.
• Identify compensatory strategies and sensory adaptation.
• Understand the importance of early intervention.

Topics:
• Developmental domains: physical, cognitive, social-emotional.
• Impact of lack of visual input on development.
• Sensory compensation: touch, hearing, smell, taste.
• Early intervention programmes and family support.
• Case studies of developmental delays.

Day 3: Communication and Language Development

Objectives:
• Explain how blind and partially sighted children develop communication skills.
• Identify alternative communication methods (e.g., tactile signing, braille).
• Apply strategies to enhance language acquisition.
• Understand the role of orientation and mobility in communication.

• Pre-linguistic communication and joint attention.
• Braille literacy and tactile graphics.
• Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

Day 4: Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Foundations

Objectives:
• Define orientation and mobility and its importance for independence.
• Teach basic spatial concepts and body awareness.
• Introduce pre-cane skills and protective techniques.
• Create safe environments for exploration.

• Spatial concepts: left/right, front/back, above/below.
• Body awareness and laterality.
• Pre-cane skills: trailing, protective techniques.
• Sound localisation and echolocation.
• Environmental modifications for safety.

Day 5: Sensory Stimulation and Integration

Objectives:
• Understand sensory integration theory and its relevance.
• Design activities to stimulate remaining senses.
• Identify signs of sensory overload and calming strategies.
• Use multisensory approaches to enhance learning.

• Sensory integration: tactile, auditory, proprioceptive, vestibular.
• Multisensory learning activities.
• Sensory diets and calming techniques.
• Use of sound, texture, and smell in lessons.
• Adapting toys and materials.

Day 6: Social and Emotional Development

Objectives:
• Recognise social challenges faced by visually impaired children.
• Teach social skills through role-play and direct instruction.
• Build self-esteem and resilience.
• Address emotional regulation and behaviour management.

Day 7: Independent Living Skills – Activities of Daily Living (ADL)

• Identify essential ADL skills for independence.
• Teach self-care routines (dressing, feeding, hygiene).
• Adapt home and school environments.
• Use task analysis to break down complex skills.

• Personal hygiene and grooming.
• Dressing and fastenings.

Day 8: Assistive Technology and Low Vision Devices

Objectives:
• Explore types of assistive technology (AT) for visual impairment.
• Demonstrate use of magnifiers, screen readers, and braille devices.
• Evaluate AT for different age groups and needs.
• Integrate AT into daily learning and life.

Topics:
• Low vision aids: optical and electronic magnifiers.
• Screen readers (JAWS, NVDA) and magnification software.
• Braille notetakers and refreshable braille displays.
• Talking calculators and GPS apps.
• Selecting and maintaining AT.

Day 9: Inclusive Education and Curriculum Adaptations

Day 14: Assessment and Individualised Planning

• Monitor progress and adjust interventions.

Day 15: Advocacy and Rights Awareness

Day 17: Integration, Evaluation, and Action Planning

• Evaluate programme effectiveness and outcomes.
• Prepare for certification and implementation.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
