• The Braille cell: 6-dot configuration and numbering (dots 1-6)

Day 2: Mastering the Braille Alphabet and Basic Punctuation

Objectives:
• Accurately identify and write all 26 Braille alphabet characters
• Apply correct finger positioning for reading and writing Braille
• Recognise and use basic punctuation marks in Braille
• Begin developing tactile sensitivity and discrimination skills

Topics:
• Detailed study of Braille alphabet (a-z) patterns and groupings
• Practical exercises: reading and writing letters using Perkins brailler or slate and stylus
• Introduction to full cell, capital, and number indicators
• Basic punctuation: comma, full stop, question mark, exclamation mark
• Tactile development activities and sensitivity training
• Common errors and how to avoid them in early learning
• Paired practice: dictation and transcription of simple words

Day 3: Numbers, Contractions, and Grade 1 Braille Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Confidently read and write numbers 0-9 in Braille
• Understand and apply single-letter contractions (Grade 1 Braille)
• Differentiate between uncontracted and contracted Braille forms
• Develop speed and accuracy in basic Braille transcription

• Single-letter contractions and their usage rules
• Reading exercises with mixed letters, numbers, and basic punctuation

Day 4: Grade 2 Braille - Whole Word and Part-Word Contractions

Objectives:
• Master common whole-word contractions in Grade 2 Braille
• Apply part-word contractions correctly in various contexts
• Understand contraction rules and exceptions in South African usage
• Increase reading fluency through structured practice exercises

• Advanced contractions: ble, ation, ally, ness, less
• Mathematical symbols: plus, minus, equals, multiplication, division

• Formatting indicators: headings, lists, italics, bold

• Transcription of formatted documents with mixed content

Day 6: Technical and Computer Braille Codes

Objectives:
• Understand computer Braille (ASCII Braille) and its applications
• Apply technical codes for computer programming and digital content

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
